Join AMKS in Supporting & Raising Autism Safety Awareness
Hello Friends and Supporters of Autism Moms Know Safety!
It's Autism Awareness Month!
Last October, Autism Moms Knows Safety created the AMKS Safety Kit, a free-of-charge toolkit for families and caregivers with ASD dependents. These toolkits are getting a ton of great responses and even greater requests, which have more than quadrupled since our launch.
What is the AMKS Safety Kit?
AMKS is committed to those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who have wandering tendencies and may wander or elope from a safe environment. These individuals may be non-verbal or unable to recognize danger. These free kits are given to autism families and caregivers to help spark the safety conversations in their home. It’s a means to educate, raise awareness and share simple tools for Autism safety that can help prevent wandering and/or assist others if your child is missing to help get them home safely. In addition to resources developed by AMKS, five other partners have joined us in making this kit possible.
What Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Families are saying about the AMKS Safety Kits:
“Your safety kits are nothing short of amazing! Thank you for all you do!”
“This had so many things I’d never seen before!” “Ready to use tools!” “It provides all the things one might not think of like ID Bracelets, car safety and [tools] to teach my child safety/public signs!”
“I loved the car decals that displayed non-verbal etc. I love the bracelet for outs to big places. I’m just so grateful for all your ASD support. Thank you so much.”
When I started putting these safety kits together last Fall, I knew it would be an out of pocket expense, with the packing help of friends and family. This February, Centria Autism Services of Michigan provided AMKS with their first ever grant of $1000, providing me with the ability to print and deliver 250 safety kits. The response has been incredible as more organizations and blogs have begun sharing this free resource. Over the course of three days, requests ballooned to over 500 and the need for educational and safety resources was clear. With requests nearing 700, and estimated to top 1000 by the end of April, AMKS wants to continue to provide these essential tools.
